Old-fashioned dark dog fron Doc. Roland's Igloo Pak line

Conformation showing is the most-common meaning of "dog show", in which dogs are rated for how well their appearance conforms to a standard. The Siberian Husky breed was officially recognized in 1930 by the American Kennel Club and in 1939 by the Canadian Kennel Club. The Siberian standard has since been revised many times. Some people argue that the present standard does not incorporate the working heritage of the breed, which creates a gap between the ‘show’ lines and the ‘working’ lines. It is very rare to see a Seppala in the show ring today just as it is rare to see a 'show Siberian' team being competitive in racing circles.

So how exactly does a person train their dogs to show? Many beginners assume all their dog needs to do is stand still while being handled and heel when the judge asks for the dogs to be gaited. There is much more to dog handling than meets the eye.

Let’s begin with show terminology. The main difference between show dogs and your pet is how you phrase things. For example:

  • Pet dogs shed ... Show dogs blow coat.
  • Pet dogs are in heat ... Show dogs come into season.
  • Pet dogs trot ... Show dogs gait or move.
  • Pet dogs stand ... Show dogs stack.
  • Pet dogs get a bath ... Show dogs are groomed.
  • Pet dogs beg for treats ... Show dogs express desire for bait.
  • Pet dogs raid the garbage ... Obedience dogs show a natural tendency for scent articles.
  • Pet dogs jump the fence ... Obedience dogs demonstrate natural jumping ability.
  • Pet dogs poop ... Obedience dogs toilet.
  • Pet dogs bark at other dogs ... Obedience dogs show excitement before showing.

Like I said, these are the main differences, although some breeders would object. Anyone can show a dog as long as the dog is purebred, has a registration number and the dog is unaltered. Now whether the dog is show quality is another question.

Many dog show terms are self explanatory, but if you are still unsure of a meaning, here is the largest on-line glossary of terms of which I'm aware:

All show dogs must know a certain amount of obedience training before entering a ring. At minimum, they should know to heel and to not attack other dogs. Bear in mind that it is not desirable to show a dog who sits all the time. Granted that this is a natural repose posture, it must not be encouraged. The judge will need to evaluate the build and proportions of your dog.

As an extra note, remember a dog show is about the dogs. Handlers should wear outfits that are relatively neutral. Don't wear anything that takes the attention away from your dog.
